The Experience

I didn’t expect my first real view of Granada to come with mud on my shoes. We started just below the Cuesta de Gomérez, where the street trees almost block out the sky. Our guide, Pablo, handed us helmets and grinned like he knew what was coming. I’d never been on a Segway before (not counting that one time at a mall), so I was nervous — but after wobbling once or twice, it felt weirdly natural. The city noise faded as we rolled under the thick green of the Alhambra’s forest. It smelled damp and earthy, like moss after rain.

Pablo kept pointing out little things — an old fountain half-hidden in ivy, a spot where you could hear water running under the stones. He told us stories about the palace walls above us, how they look different from every angle if you pay attention. The off-road part was bumpier than I thought; my teeth actually clicked together when we hit a root. But then we broke out of the trees and suddenly there was all this open space — hills rolling away, Sierra Nevada in the distance still holding onto some snow even though it was warm down here. That contrast sticks with me.

We stopped at the top for maybe fifteen minutes. Pablo handed around some snacks (I still don’t know what that nutty bar was called — he tried to explain but I butchered it). Everyone took photos, but honestly I just wanted to sit and listen to the wind for a bit. You could see Granada spread out below on one side, mountains on the other. It felt like being between two worlds for a second. Going back down was easier — maybe because I finally relaxed into it, or maybe because gravity did most of the work.
