The Experience
“You’re not scared of heights, right?” That’s what our guide José asked me as I fumbled with the harness in Zafarraya. I laughed — but honestly, my palms were already sweaty. The drive out from Granada was quiet at first, morning light flickering through olive groves. By the time we reached Las Parideras, the air smelled like wild thyme and something sharp I couldn’t name. We suited up — helmets tight enough to make you feel like a bobblehead — and José ran us through every carabiner and pulley. He had this way of explaining things that made even the monkey pass sound doable.
The first zip line caught me off guard — it’s faster than it looks, wind in your teeth and that weird metallic taste from gripping the cable too hard. There’s a moment halfway up the John Hogbin via ferrata where you just stop talking because all you hear is your own breath and the sheep bells echoing somewhere below. The Tibetan bridge wobbled more than I wanted to admit (I might’ve muttered a few words my mom wouldn’t approve of), but José just grinned and told us to look up at the valley instead of our feet. Didn’t expect to actually enjoy that part.
At the top, we sat on warm stone steps eating salty ham and bread — nothing fancy but tasted perfect after that climb. Someone popped open a bottle (cava? I never asked) for a toast over Zafarraya valley; sun on our faces, dirt under our fingernails. The group was small enough that we all swapped stories without feeling awkward — one guy tried to teach me how to pronounce “pendulum” in Spanish and gave up laughing. On the way back to Granada I kept thinking about that view from the summit — still do sometimes when I see mountains out my window.
