Via Ferrata in Güéjar Sierra: 130m Zip Line & Climbing
A 130-meter zip line cuts through the middle of a climbing course, not at the end.
La Araña via ferrata in Güéjar Sierra (Sierra Nevada) is an intermediate climbing course where you ascend 895 meters using fixed equipment, cables and your own strength, then descend by zip line. The 4-hour activity includes all climbing gear, safety systems and a live guide in English or Spanish. Intermediate difficulty (K3+–K4) means you need moderate fitness and climbing experience; the course is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns.
The Experience
Güéjar Sierra sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and La Araña (The Spider) is the via ferrata that climbs its rock face. You start with all necessary equipment fitted and checked — harness, helmet, carabiners — and the guide walks you through the fixed route. The course runs 895 meters with a vertical gain of 177 meters, and the path is not a hike: you are using your hands and feet on metal rungs, cables and rock, testing balance and upper body strength at every step.
The challenges come in sequence. A 10-meter monkey bridge asks you to cross hand-over-hand above the slope. A 20-meter Tibetan bridge sways as you walk it. A 5-meter pendulum swings you out and back. A 10-meter wooden beam bridge narrows the path. Fixed wooden steps climb a 10-meter wall. Then comes the 130-meter zip line — the moment the course pivots from climbing to descent, and you drop through open air with the village and valley spreading below. The zip line is not a separate add-on; it is built into the route, so the day has rhythm instead of a single long push upward.
The whole activity takes 4 hours. You need at least moderate physical fitness and a willingness to work on vertical terrain; the guide is there to coach technique and manage safety, not to carry you. The view from the top and the descent by zip line are the payoff, but the climbing itself is the thing you came to do.
What’s included
All climbing gear — harness, helmet, carabiners and safety systems — and a live guide in English or Spanish.

Is this one for you?Book this if you have climbing experience or are comfortable learning technique on a steep rock face with a guide. The intermediate difficulty (K3+–K4) and the 4-hour commitment mean this is not a casual outing; you are climbing under your own power and testing your strength and nerve. The zip line is the finale, not a shortcut — you earn the descent.

What does intermediate difficulty K3+–K4 mean for someone who has never done via ferrata?
K3+–K4 means you use fixed metal rungs, cables and your own strength to climb, and the terrain is steep enough that a slip would be serious — that is why the harness and guide matter. It is not beginner-level, but it is not expert climbing either; you need moderate fitness and the ability to grip and pull yourself upward for sustained periods. The guide will show you technique and manage the rope systems that keep you safe.
Is the 130-meter zip line part of the climbing route, or does it happen after?
The zip line is built into the route itself, not a separate descent. You climb the 895-meter course, and the zip line is how you come down — it is the final challenge and the reward at once, dropping you through the air with views of the village and valley below.
What does all necessary equipment include?
All necessary equipment means harness, helmet, carabiners, and the safety systems that attach you to the fixed cables and rungs along the route. You bring nothing climbing-related; the guide provides everything and checks every connection before you start.
How fit do I need to be to finish this?
You need at least moderate physical fitness — the ability to pull yourself upward on a vertical or near-vertical face for sustained periods, and the grip strength to hold metal rungs and cables. The guide can coach technique, but they cannot carry you. The activity is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, spinal injuries, or pregnancy.
What language does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English or Spanish, and you choose which one when you book.
How long does the whole thing take from start to finish?
The activity is 4 hours total, including equipment fitting, the climb, the challenges along the route, and the zip line descent.
