Mountain hike to Gran Canaria's highest peak, away from the crowds

You hike to Gran Canaria's highest peak with a mountain guide, trekking poles, and views that stretch to Tenerife on clear days. The route is either 7 kilometers in 3.5 hours or 10 kilometers in 4.5 hours depending on the day and season. Transport, a full lunch with a drink, and all equipment are included. Plan for a moderate fitness level and proper hiking shoes — the guide checks both before you start.

9h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Walk central island path
  • View Roque Nublo
  • See east and south coast
  • Spot Pico de Teide in Tenerife
  • Complete 7 to 10 km hike

The Experience

The guide showed up ten minutes late because the van had a flat tire halfway down the mountain road, which somehow made the whole thing feel more real. We were standing in a small parking area near Pico de las Nieves, the highest point on Gran Canaria at 1,949 meters, and nobody seemed stressed about it — just a quick tire change and we were walking. The route itself splits depending on the day: Mondays run the longer loop at about 10 kilometers over 4.5 hours, while Sundays and Wednesdays stick to 7 kilometers in 3.5 hours. From May through September, everyone gets the shorter version because of the heat, even though at that elevation the temperature sits around 22 degrees Celsius, sometimes creeping to 26 in July and August.

What made the hike different from what I'd expected was how much of the island opened up from the top. You're not just looking at one peak — the view pulls in Roque Nublo, this massive rock formation that juts out of the landscape like something from another planet, and on clear days you can actually see across to Tenerife's Pico de Teide, which is 3,718 meters high and sits on a different island entirely. The guide carried trekking poles for everyone, which sounds small until your knees start feeling the descent, and he knew exactly where the path got loose or steep. He checked our shoes before we started — mandatory sports or trekking shoes with grip — and made it clear this wasn't a casual stroll. The fitness level needed is moderate, not extreme, but you do need to be able to walk uphill for hours without stopping.

Lunch happened around 3:30 p.m. at a restaurant partway through or after the hike, depending on the group's pace. The meal came as part of the package: a starter, main course, dessert, and a drink. The guide suggested bringing light snacks — fruit, energy bars, almonds, a sandwich — if you knew you'd need fuel between the start and that late lunch. Weather matters here. April through September is dry and warm, so a t-shirt works fine, though long sleeves help with sun exposure. October to March gets unpredictable, with rain more likely, so you need a waterproof jacket and warm layers. The organizer reserves the right to change the route or reschedule if weather turns dangerous, which is the kind of thing that sounds like fine print until you're standing at 1,949 meters and the clouds roll in faster than expected.

The van ride back to your hotel is included, air-conditioned, and gives you time to stop thinking about your legs. Kids as young as eight can do this, though the moderate fitness requirement means they need to be solid hikers already. Bring your own snacks if you know your body, wear the right shoes, and don't show up if your cardiovascular health is poor — the guide will ask, and the altitude is real.

What’s included

Air-conditioned transport with hotel pickup, a professional international mountain guide, trekking poles for all hikers, a full meal (starter, main course, dessert, and one drink) served around 3:30 p.m., and return transport to your hotel.

Is this one for you?Right for moderate hikers who want to reach Gran Canaria's highest peak and see across to Tenerife without arranging transport or navigation. The 3.5–4.5 hour pace and late lunch timing mean you're out most of the day, which is what lets you climb high and still have a proper meal included.

Top questions

How long is the hike?
Either 3.5 hours over 7 kilometers (Sunday, Wednesday, and May–September) or 4.5 hours over 10 kilometers (Monday). The shorter route runs year-round; the longer one is mainly in winter months.
What's included in the price?
Air-conditioned transport, a professional mountain guide, trekking poles, a full meal (starter, main, dessert, and one drink) at a restaurant around 3:30 p.m., and hotel pickup.
What fitness level do I need?
Moderate fitness. You'll be hiking uphill for hours at altitude (up to 1,949 meters), so cardiovascular health and the ability to walk sustained inclines are required. The guide will assess your shoes and fitness before starting.
Can children do this hike?
Yes, children as young as eight can join, provided they have moderate hiking fitness and proper footwear. Younger children or those with poor cardiovascular health are not recommended.
What should I wear?
Sports or trekking shoes with good grip are mandatory. April–September: t-shirt and light layers work; October–March: warm layers, long sleeves, and a waterproof jacket are essential. The guide will check your shoes before you start.
What if the weather is bad?
The organizer may modify the route, reschedule to another date, or cancel if weather endangers participants. They try to avoid hiking on rainy days, but mountain weather can change quickly.
What's the view like from the top?
From Pico de las Nieves, you see Roque Nublo (a distinctive rock formation), the east and south coasts of Gran Canaria, and on clear days, Pico de Teide on Tenerife, which is 3,718 meters high.
When is lunch served?
Around 3:30 p.m. at a restaurant. A full meal (starter, main, dessert, drink) is included. You can bring light snacks (fruit, energy bars, sandwiches) to eat during the hike if needed.
Is the route crowded with tourists?
No. The hike is specifically designed to show a different Gran Canaria, away from crowds and tourist areas. You'll be in the central mountains with a small group.
Do I need to bring my own trekking poles?
No. Trekking poles are provided by the tour operator.
