The experience

Girona sits on a hill over 2,000 years old, and this tour moves through the layers. You start at Plaça Sant Feliu and walk into the Cathedral of Santa María, where the guide explains the building's place in the city's long history. From there you move to the Arab Baths, one of the few remaining structures of that era in Catalonia, then into Sant Feliu Basilica itself. The guide is a local expert in the city's history, so the stops are not just monuments. They are the places where Girona's story actually happened.

The Jewish Quarter, known as El Call, takes up a large part of the walk. The streets are narrow and steep, winding between buildings that date back centuries. You'll also climb the Roman and Medieval walls that ring the old city, which gives you the view from above: the Onyar River dividing the old quarters from the new city, and the layout of Girona spreading out below. The tour includes a stop at the Eiffel Bridge, built by Gustave Eiffel a decade before he designed the Paris tower. All entrance fees are included, so there's no stopping to buy tickets at each site.

The walk is about three hours and covers a lot of ground, with stairs and slopes throughout because the city climbs. Bring comfortable shoes and water. The tour usually starts at 11 a.m., though other times can be arranged if you contact the operator. If you're coming from Barcelona, the AVANT high-speed trains take 35 minutes to Girona. From the station it's about a 20-minute walk to the meeting point.
