The experience

You arrive in Galicia and the guide picks you up to begin a route built around wine, not just sightseeing. Day one takes you south to Cambados, the European Wine Capital, where you taste at the Pazo de Fefiñanes cellar and then board a catamaran to the mussel farms off El Grove while sampling mussels and Albariño wine. You sleep in the Parador del Albariño, a restored manor house overlooking the coast.

The second day runs the Atlantic edge: Combarro's fishing harbor with its stone granaries, then Pontevedra. Galicia's most monumental city after Santiago. You continue to Baiona, where Columbus's ships first reported the New World, and its fortress castle of Monterreal. Lunch comes at the XII-century Oya monastery on the waterfront, then you climb Mount Santa Tecla to walk among Celtic Iron Age settlements and look out over the Atlantic toward Portugal. That evening you cross the river to dine in Valença do Minho, a Portuguese border town ringed by triple fortified walls.

Day three pivots inland to Orense, which holds four of Galicia's five wine appellations. You visit its thermal springs and cathedral, then San Pedro de Rocas: a VI-century monastery perched on rock cliffs, the oldest in Galicia. Castro Caldelas follows with its castle and views into the Ribeira Sacra canyon. The afternoon descends toward the Sil river, where you stop at wineries to taste the region's "heroic wines" grown on the steepest slopes, and visit viewpoints that frame the canyon. You stay in the Parador de Monforte de Lemos, a fortified monastery on a hilltop.

The final day takes you to Valdeorras, known for Godello and Mencia wines. You pass Montefurado, an old Roman tunnel cut through rock to divert the Sil river for gold mining, then visit the largest Roman open-air gold mine in the world: a UNESCO site where the red-stained mountain shows where ore was extracted. After lunch you head back to Santiago. The guide carries a phone charger, provides WiFi on board, bottled water, and a photographic memento of the trip.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, German and Italian.

What wines will I taste on this 4-day tour of Galicia?

You taste Albariño wines at the Pazo de Fefiñanes cellar in Cambados on day one, then Ribeira Sacra wines, grown on steep canyon slopes, at local wineries on day three. Day four takes you to Valdeorras, famous for Godello and Mencia wines. Mussels and wine come together on the catamaran excursion off El Grove.

Do I need to arrange my own transportation between towns?

No. The guide picks you up from Santiago and drives the entire route, stopping at each town, winery, monastery and viewpoint. You travel as a private group with the same guide for all four days.

What are the Paradores I'll stay in?

Paradores are historic properties, usually old manor houses, castles or monasteries. You stay in the Parador del Albariño in Cambados on night one, the Parador de Tuy overlooking the Miño river and Portugal on night two, and the Parador de Monforte de Lemos, a fortified monastery on a hilltop, on night three. The operator notes these are "or equivalent" properties if the exact Parador is unavailable.

What is the Ribeira Sacra and why are its wines called "heroic"?

The Ribeira Sacra is a wine region in the Sil river canyon where vineyards cling to the steepest slopes. Growers must harvest by hand on terrain so steep that mechanized farming is impossible, earning the wines the name "heroic wines." You visit wineries in the region on day three and taste them while taking in views of the canyon.

Can the itinerary be changed to match my interests?

Yes. The tour description states it can be adapted to your specific needs. The guide is a wine expert who can adjust the route, though the main wine regions, cities and coastal stops form the core of the four days.
