The experience
Nine hours means you cross into France early and stay long enough to move through three towns without rushing. The day starts at a cheesemaker in Saint Jean de Luz (the affineur who stores and ages cheese until it reaches the right moment to eat), where you taste a selection paired with French wine from Irulegui. The same village holds the Maison Adam pastry shop, which has been making macarons since 1660, and the Church of St. John the Baptist, with its polychromed woodwork and carved miniature ships hung as offerings for safe passage at sea.
Biarritz comes next: a walk along the promenade past the sumptuous hotels and up to the 44-meter lighthouse, then into Les Halles market to taste Arcachon oysters, prawns and escargots with a Bordeaux white wine. The market is where locals shop for cheese, charcuterie and pastries, and it is the place to buy if you want to take food home. You finish on the Spanish side of the Bidasoa river in Hondarribia, a medieval walled town with a fishing district the New York Times called one of the world's best for cuisine. Pintxos at a prize-winning restaurant close the loop and give you a chance to compare Basque-French and Basque-Spanish food side by side.
Your driver-guide speaks English or Spanish and handles all transport in an air-conditioned minivan. Hotel pickup and drop-off from San Sebastian are included, as are wine, beer or cider with the meals and all the food tastings throughout the day. The tour is private, so the pace and stops are yours alone.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (10 to 17 years); Infant (under 10).
What is the difference between a cheesemaker and an affineur?
A cheesemaker produces the cheese. An affineur receives it from producers and stores it in the right conditions until it reaches maturity and is ready to eat. In Saint Jean de Luz, you taste cheeses that have been aged by the affineur to their peak.
Does the tour include time to shop for food in the Biarritz market?
Yes. After tasting oysters, prawns and charcuterie at the market's best bar, you have time to buy if you want to take French cheeses, charcuterie or pastries back with you.
Why does the tour end in Hondarribia instead of returning to San Sebastian?
Hondarribia sits on the Spanish coast just across the Bidasoa river from France, and its fishing district is recognized as one of the world's best for food. Ending there lets you taste pintxos at a prize-winning restaurant and compare Basque-French and Basque-Spanish cuisine before returning to San Sebastian.
Is hotel pickup included, or do I need to meet the tour somewhere?
Hotel pickup and drop-off from San Sebastian are included in the tour price.
