The Experience

You start from Santiago and head west toward the coast. The first stop is Ponte Maceira, a small village with a stone bridge and a connection to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. From there the route moves to the Santuario da Virxe da Barca near Muxia, a sanctuary famous for its Atlantic setting and the legends tied to the Apostle James — the movie "The Way" was filmed here. The landscape shifts as you approach the ocean, and the guide explains the Jacobean tradition woven through these stops.

Cape Finisterre is the centerpiece: the lighthouse marks Km 0 of the Camino's coastal extension, and from this point you see the panorama of the entire Costa da Morte. The name itself — "Coast of Death" — comes from the shipwrecks that once claimed vessels here. You have time to walk the headland and take in the view before heading into Finisterre town for lunch (your own choice of restaurants). The stop there is long enough to eat and rest without rushing.

The afternoon takes you to Ezaro waterfall, the only waterfall in continental Europe that flows directly into the ocean, set against Mount Pindo — a mountain with pre-Roman legend attached to it. You also visit the Horreo de Carnota, the longest traditional granary in Galicia, where the guide explains this piece of Galician rural culture. The final stop is Muros, a medieval port that once served Santiago, with time to walk the old town before the drive back. The whole day is nine hours, including transport and stops.
