The experience
Your cruise ship docks and you have a free afternoon. Instead of the standard beach stop, you're picked up and driven to Cala Fornells, a cove on Mallorca's coast where the real action starts. Coasteering strings together four different challenges (climbing rock faces, abseiling down them, swimming between points and scrambling over stone) into a single four-hour session. A qualified local guide leads the group through the sequence, and you move at a pace that keeps everyone together.
What you actually do changes by the minute. You'll climb sections of rock using handholds and footholds, then abseil back down on a rope with proper rigging. You swim between natural platforms, sometimes jumping into deeper water, sometimes wading through shallows. Rock scrambling fills the gaps: moving over uneven stone on hands and feet, reading the terrain as you go. The guide handles the technical setup. You bring the effort and the willingness to get soaked. All equipment (harnesses, ropes, shoes) comes with you, and the guide speaks English or Spanish as a minimum, with French and German available.
You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness and comfort in water. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or during pregnancy. Minimum age is eight years old. Bring your bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and water. Lunch is on you. Heights, weights and shoe sizes must be provided at booking so the guide can prepare the right gear. The minivan returns you to the ship on schedule.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French and German.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is coasteering and how is it different from rock climbing or swimming?
Coasteering at Cala Fornells combines four activities in sequence: climbing natural rock faces, abseiling down them on rope, swimming between points in the cove, and scrambling over stone terrain. It is not a single-skill activity like climbing or swimming alone, but a continuous flow between all four, guided by a professional who manages the technical equipment while you move through the landscape.
How much of the four hours is actually in the water versus on the rock?
The activity alternates between rock work (climbing and abseiling), and water sections where you swim or wade between platforms. The guide structures the day to keep the group moving between both, so you experience the full range rather than spending most of the time on one element.
What happens if I'm not a strong swimmer?
Coasteering at Cala Fornells requires comfort in water and at least moderate fitness overall. The guide will work with your ability level within the group, but this is not a beginner swimming lesson. If swimming is a concern, discuss it when you book so the guide can assess whether the activity suits you.
Do I need to bring my own climbing or safety gear?
No. All equipment (harnesses, ropes, abseiling gear and specialized shoes) is provided and fitted to your height, weight and shoe size at the start. You bring your bathing suit, towel, sunscreen and water. Lunch is your own.
How does pickup from the cruise ship work?
You're collected from your ship and transported by minivan to Cala Fornells. The return is timed to get you back to the port before departure, so the entire four-hour activity fits inside your port call.
