Cadaqués and Sant Pere de Rodes from Girona: Monastery and coast
A Romanesque monastery perched on the ridge above the easternmost point of Spain
This full-day tour from Girona visits three landmarks in northeast Catalonia near the French border: the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, a 10th-century Romanesque complex built on a hilltop with views across Cap de Creus; the natural park at Cap de Creus, where the Iberian Peninsula's easternmost point meets the coast; and the fishing village of Cadaqués, where you walk through streets tied to Picasso and the Dalí family. A local guide leads groups of up to six people in an air-conditioned minivan, departing and returning to Girona city.

The experience
The day centers on Sant Pere de Rodes, a monastery that rose from the 11th century as the spiritual heart of the Empúries county. The complex holds a church, bell tower, cloister, sacristies and the abbot's palace, all built with the architectural sophistication that marks Catalan Romanesque. The entrance portal, carved by the Master of Cabestany in white marble, depicts scenes from the life of Christ. From the monastery grounds, the views stretch across Cap de Creus and the coastline below.
Cap de Creus itself is a natural park where the landscape has been shaped by wind, sun and salt spray. You walk around the lighthouse at the peninsula's tip, the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, and take in the vistas of small coves and rocky shores. The route then moves to Cadaqués, a village on the Costa Brava where you have free time for lunch. The guided portion covers its history as a fishing port and its ties to artists: Picasso stayed here, and the Dalí family spent summers in the area. The tour returns to Girona by early evening, typically around 5:30 or 6pm depending on the season.
Groups stay small (a maximum of six people per booking), and travel in an air-conditioned minivan. A local guide leads the tour in either English or Spanish, your choice at checkout. The monastery entrance fee is included with the tour. Lunch in Cadaqués is on your own.
