Climb canyon walls and rappel back down through a UNESCO ravine

Almadenes via ferrata is a beginner-level climbing activity in Cieza's Almadenes Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you climb the canyon walls on fixed anchors and rappel three times down the Higuera ravine. The 2.5-hour outing includes technical gear (harness, helmet, anchors), a certified guide in English or Spanish, and a photo report. Available July through November. Children welcome from age 12.

The experience

The Almadenes Canyon sits in one of Murcia's most striking landscapes, and this via ferrata takes you into its heart. You'll leave your car at the hydroelectric power station and walk about ten minutes to the start. The climbing itself is initiation-level (fixed anchors guide your hands and feet along the canyon walls), but the position you're in is anything but basic. Partway through, you cross a small Tibetan bridge into the Higuera ravine, the narrow gorge where you'll do your three rappels on the way back down.

All technical equipment comes with you: harness, helmet and the anchors that keep you safe on the rock. A certified guide leads the group in English or Spanish, pacing the climb so you can take in the views without rushing. The whole outing runs 2.5 hours from start to finish. A photo report of the day gets sent to you afterward.

What is the Almadenes Canyon and why is it special?

The Almadenes Canyon near Cieza has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and is considered one of the most beautiful places in the Region of Murcia. The via ferrata climbs directly along its canyon walls, so you're moving through the landscape itself rather than looking at it from a distance.

Do I need climbing experience to do this via ferrata?

No. This is a via ferrata initiation, designed for beginners. The fixed anchors guide your route, and a certified guide leads the group. Physical fitness helps, but the operator notes the activity suits all fitness levels.

What happens during the three rappels?

After climbing through the canyon and crossing the Tibetan bridge into the Higuera ravine, you rappel down three times on your way back. The guide manages the descents, and you're secured with the same harness and equipment you wore climbing up.

When can I do this activity, and are there age limits?

The via ferrata runs from July 15 through November 30 due to environmental restrictions in the canyon. Children are welcome from age 12 onward.

Technical equipment (harness, helmet, anchors), a certified guide service in English or Spanish, and a photo report of the day are all included.
