The experience
Seven to eight hours lets the tour move between four distinct sites without rushing. Seongsan Ilchulbong, the tuff cone that rises 180 metres from a shallow seabed eruption 5,000 years ago, anchors the morning. The guide explains how hot magma meeting underground water created the violent reaction that built it. Manjanggul cave follows, a partially multi-level lava tube stretching 7.4 kilometres with a main passage 18 metres wide and 23 metres high: one of the largest in the world and hundreds of thousands of years old, with a 7.6-metre stalagmite column at the end of the opening section that ranks among the largest ever recorded.
The walk up Seobong hill takes 20 minutes and reaches a viewpoint over Hamdeok Beach without steep climbing. A pass-by of Gwangchigi Beach follows, offering a panoramic view back toward Seongsan Sunrise Peak. The cedar forest walk at Sari-ni wraps the afternoon in the scent of the trees. The name means "sacred forest" or "to wrap a thread in a circle so it doesn't scatter." The haenyeo museum closes the day with exhibits on Jeju's diving culture, which stretches back to prehistoric times. An actual haenyeo house was donated and moved into the museum, and a seven-minute film is included.
The guide is nationally certified and speaks English, and can answer questions about Jeju's history and culture throughout the day. An air-conditioned vehicle and hotel pickup are included. Entrance fees to the sites and lunch are not covered by the tour price.
