The Experience
I didn’t expect the air at Gyeongbokgung Palace to feel so crisp — even with the city humming just outside the gates. Our guide, Minji, greeted us right at our hotel (I was still half-awake), and somehow by 10am we were already wandering under those painted eaves. She pointed out a dragon detail I’d have missed; apparently it’s good luck if you spot it first thing in the morning. Not sure if that worked for me, but it made me smile.
The best part about this private Seoul tour was just how much say we had in everything. We skipped a couple spots I’d read about online because Minji suggested Bukchon Hanok Village instead — “It’s quieter before lunch,” she said. She was right. The alleys were empty except for an old man sweeping his doorstep and some school kids giggling over their phones. The wooden doors felt cool when I touched them, and there was this faint smell of pine mixed with something sweet from a bakery nearby. I tried to say ‘hanok’ properly and Minji laughed — apparently my accent is hopeless.
Lunch happened somewhere off Insadong Street, where I ordered bibimbap but ended up trading bites with everyone else at the table (the kimchi stew was spicy enough to make me hiccup). After that we wandered through Gwangjang Market — honestly, the sound of vendors calling out and pans sizzling is still ringing in my ears. I bought a tiny pouch of dried seaweed just because the woman selling it winked at me. By late afternoon, Namsan Tower was glowing above us and we took the cable car up for those wide city views — all those little lights coming on as the sun faded out behind the buildings.
I keep thinking about that moment on the tower’s deck when everything went quiet for a second — Seoul spread out below, but it felt oddly peaceful up there. Maybe it was just being able to pick our own pace all day, or maybe it was Minji telling us stories about her childhood visits to these places. Either way, I left feeling like I’d actually seen pieces of someone’s real city, not just a checklist of sights.
