The Experience

I’ll be honest — we almost didn’t make it to the right meeting spot. My phone glitched, maps spun in circles, and I was already sweating under my jacket before our guide, Jihoon, found us waving near the wrong subway exit. He just grinned and said everyone gets lost at least once in Seoul. That put me at ease right away. We squeezed into his van (still a little embarrassed), and he asked if we wanted pork BBQ or something else for dinner. I blurted out “pajeon?” because I’d seen it on YouTube. Jihoon laughed — apparently my pronunciation means “green onion pancake disaster” in Korean. He promised to order extra crispy.

The air outside Gwangjang Market was thick with frying oil and chatter — honestly, I could’ve stood there sniffing for hours. Inside, it was chaos: silk shops upstairs, old ladies selling bindaetteok downstairs, neon signs everywhere. Jihoon pointed out a stall where he used to eat as a student. We ate hunks of pork BBQ that sizzled so loud you had to shout over them, dipping everything in sauces I still can’t name (one tasted like fire and sugar). There’s this moment when you’re full but keep eating because everyone else is — that happened here.

After dinner we walked along Cheonggyecheon Stream — the water made this soft rushing sound under the city lights, and couples sat on the edge with their feet dangling just above the surface. It felt quieter than I expected for downtown Seoul at night. Then came Naksan Park; climbing up past old stone walls, my legs burned but the view… well, you know when a city feels endless?
