Han River evenings with fried chicken, laughter and city lights

You’ll sit down by Seoul’s Han River for a ready-made picnic — fried chicken and beer included — then play classic Korean games that break the ice fast. With a local host leading everything from “Red Light, Green Light” to folding ttakji tiles, you’ll end up laughing with people you just met. The night wraps up on a river cruise under city lights that might surprise you with how calm it feels.

4h

Step-by-step itinerary

Evening picnic, games, and river cruise

  • Check in at Yeouido Han River Park
  • Walk to riverside picnic area
  • Enjoy Korean fried chicken and drinks
  • Play traditional Korean games
  • Board Han River night cruise at 10 PM
  • Watch Seoul skyline and bridges
  • Listen to live music on cruise

The Experience

“If you lose at ttakji, you buy the next round!” our guide Min joked as we settled into Yeouido Han River Park. He’d already set up chairs and little lamps by the water, so all we had to do was drop our bags and take in the view — that wide, slow river with the city blinking behind it. I could smell fried chicken before I even saw it. Three kinds: sticky sweet, spicy (which made my nose tingle), and something with a mountain of spring onion on top. The air was still warm enough for short sleeves, but someone handed me a cold beer anyway. First sip tasted like relief after a long subway ride.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much playing Red Light, Green Light with strangers — or to get so competitive about slapping those paper ttakji tiles. Min showed us how to fold them (mine looked nothing like his) and when I tried to say “padak” in Korean, he just grinned and shook his head. It felt easy to join in; nobody cared if you won or lost. There were couples on dates, friends sharing soju, even a solo traveler who ended up teaching us her own game from Canada. The whole thing felt less like a tour and more like an evening out with locals who actually wanted you there.

Around ten, we walked over to the pier for the Han River night cruise. The boat was quieter than I thought it’d be — soft music playing inside while outside the skyline stretched out in every direction. Bridges glowed yellow and blue over the water; someone pointed out Namsan Tower way off in the distance. It started to drizzle halfway through but nobody moved inside — everyone just pulled up their hoods or shared umbrellas without fuss. I remember standing at the railing with my hands cold on the metal, watching Seoul slide past in ripples of light. That feeling stuck with me longer than any photo could.

What’s included

Your evening includes all picnic supplies set up by the river (or an indoor BBQ buffet in winter), three types of Korean fried chicken paired with beer or soft drinks (plus snacks), traditional games led by your English-speaking guide, and tickets for a 50-minute VIP starlight cruise along Seoul’s Han River before heading back late at night.
