itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — DMZ tour and optional boat voyage

  • Visit Mangbaedan Altar and landmarks
  • Complete ID check before DMZ entry
  • Walk through the 3rd Invasion Tunnel
  • View North Korea from Dora Observatory
  • Take traditional boat on Imjin River

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the fences or guards—it was the sound of birds, weirdly loud against all that tension near the DMZ. Our guide, Mr. Park, joked that even the birds know where not to fly. We’d barely left Seoul when he started pointing out old steam locomotives rusting in tall grass at Imjingak. There’s this altar too—Mangbaedan—where families still come to bow toward homes they haven’t seen in decades. The air felt heavy but not in a scary way, more like everyone was holding their breath together.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to actually walk inside the 3rd Tunnel of Aggression. It’s cramped—my helmet kept bumping the ceiling—and cold enough that my breath fogged up my glasses. Mr. Park told us how it was discovered in ‘78, and you could hear pride (and maybe nerves) when he said it’s only 44km from Seoul. We laughed a bit about how we all looked in those hard hats, but nobody lingered too long down there. Climbing back out felt like surfacing after a long swim.

Dora Observatory is where things got real for me. You stand at these binoculars and look straight into North Korea—there’s Gaeseong city just sitting there, almost normal if you squint past the barbed wire and loudspeakers playing music across the fields. Some folks got quiet; others kept snapping photos. The wind picked up and carried this dry grass smell that made me think of autumn back home.

If you do the full day trip with the boat ride (which I did), you get this strange calm drifting along Imjin River in a wooden boat—the same river that crosses from North to South Korea. Our boatman didn’t say much but grinned when I tried to pronounce “Imjingang.” The water moved slow and brownish under us, and for a second it felt like time paused out there between borders. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy.
