The Experience
I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice in Jinhae to be the smell — that faint sweetness in the air, mixed with something almost woody, as we stepped off the bus. Our guide, Minji, grinned at us like she knew what was coming. She pointed out the Yeojwacheon stream, lined on both sides with cherry trees so full of petals it looked like someone had shaken out a giant pink quilt. We walked under them for an hour, petals catching in my hair and on my jacket. At one point I stopped just to listen — there was this soft hush from all the people moving slowly, taking photos or just staring up. It felt like everyone was holding their breath.
Lunch was up to us, which honestly I liked — more freedom to wander. I ended up at a tiny noodle shop where the owner barely spoke English but smiled when I tried to order kalguksu (I definitely said it wrong; she laughed and brought me extra kimchi anyway). The main street buzzed with festival energy: kids chasing each other, couples posing by the old post office (it’s apparently Korea’s oldest — built in 1912), and vendors calling out over the noise. Some folks took the monorail up Jehwangsan mountain for city views but I skipped it; just sat on a bench watching people instead.
The last stop was Gyeonghwa Station — no trains run anymore but you can walk right along the tracks under another tunnel of blossoms. There’s an old train parked there; everyone lines up for photos but if you wait a bit you get these quiet moments where it’s just you and all those petals drifting down onto rusty rails. Minji told us how locals come here every year even though they’ve seen it a hundred times. I get why now. On the ride back to Busan, my shoes were still dusted pink and I kept thinking about that hush by the stream — kind of wish I could bottle it.
