Tube down calm forest water, then paddle-board back upstream

A 3-hour tubing and stand-up paddle-boarding activity on the Storms River in Tsitsikamma's Plaatbos Indigenous Forest, starting at Tube 'n Axe Lodge in Storms River Village. You'll tube downstream past an optional 6-meter rock jump, walk the rocky river bed, then paddle-board on flat water through remote forest sections. The guide leads in English and children from age 4 are welcome.

The experience

The activity starts at Tube 'n Axe Lodge with a 30-minute kit-up and safety briefing, then a 20-minute drive through thick indigenous forest to the drop-off point at the low water bridge in Baines Pass. Each participant gets their own tube, and after a final safety demonstration, you paddle upstream into the calm of Plaatbos Nature Reserve. In the first 100 meters, there's a 6-meter optional rock jump with lower alternatives for those who'd rather skip it.

After the jump section, you paddle across to a sandy beach, get out, and walk 250 meters up the rocky river bed carrying your tube to where the SUP boards wait. From there, you paddle-board through the remote, unexplored sections of the forest on flat water. The whole outing takes roughly 3 hours and mixes tubing, walking, jumping and paddle-boarding without any whitewater sections. Private transportation is included, along with helmet, PFD, tube, SUP board, snacks and coffee or tea.
