Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng
- Descend into Sterkfontein Caves
- Explore fossil discovery sites
- See "Mrs. Ples" skull exhibit
- View "Little Foot" skeleton
- Walk past stalactites and stalagmites
- Visit Maropeng visitor center
The experience
Sterkfontein Caves sits at the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the limestone chambers have yielded more early hominin fossils than almost anywhere else on earth. The caves themselves are the draw: you walk the twisting pathways past stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years, descending deep into the subterranean passages where early humans once sheltered. The University of the Witwatersrand has managed excavations here since 1966, and the site reopened to the public in April 2025 after a closure for flooding.
Maropeng, whose name means "returning to the place of origin" in Setswana, is the official visitor center for the entire Cradle region. The tour pairs the caves themselves (the raw geological and archaeological site) with the center's interpretation of what those fossils mean for understanding human evolution. Bottled water is included throughout, and the air-conditioned vehicle handles the drive from Pretoria and the movement between sites.
The six-hour format keeps both stops inside a single morning or afternoon, so the day stays focused on the fossil discoveries and their context rather than spreading into a full-day itinerary. Your guide speaks English and leads the group through both the caves and the center. Pickup from your Pretoria accommodation is included in the booking.
What’s included

Is this one for you?The half-day length fits a morning or afternoon slot in a Pretoria itinerary without consuming a full day, so it works well alongside other activities or a longer stay in the city. Not suitable if you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns that would make the cave descent difficult.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.
What exactly is "Mrs. Ples" and why does it matter?
"Mrs. Ples" is a nearly complete Australopithecus africanus skull discovered at Sterkfontein in 1947 by Dr. Robert Broom. At 2.1 million years old, it is one of the most significant early hominin fossils ever found and provides direct evidence of our distant ancestors.
How deep do you actually go into Sterkfontein Caves?
You descend 2.5 kilometers into the limestone labyrinth, walking the pathways past towering stalactites and stalagmites that formed over millions of years. The caves were closed to the public in 2022 due to flooding and reopened on April 15, 2025.
What does Maropeng add to the tour if we're already seeing the caves?
Maropeng is the official visitor center for the Cradle of Humankind and interprets the fossil discoveries in context: explaining what the finds mean for understanding human evolution rather than just showing the geological site itself.
