The experience
Your guide picks you up from your hotel in Johannesburg and drives you to Soweto, where you'll collect either a bicycle with helmet and safety gear or board a motorized tuk-tuk. A short safety briefing happens before you set out. The bicycle route follows paved township streets (mostly flat with a few gentle inclines), and covers 6 to 10 kilometers at a relaxed pace with frequent stops for photos and stories. If you choose the tuk-tuk, you travel the same route without pedaling, and both groups move together through the day.
Vilakazi Street is the heart of the tour. It's the only street in the world that housed two Nobel Prize winners as residents: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. You'll see traditional Zulu and Tswana dances performed on the street and have time to browse handmade African crafts sold by locals. Next is Mandela House, his former residence, now a heritage site with exhibits, artifacts and guided interpretation. The Hector Peterson Museum comes next: a self-guided walk through the exhibits chronicling the 1976 Soweto student uprising. An optional 10-minute guided walk through a local shantytown follows, where your guide explains daily life in the community. You'll also visit the Cooling Towers, a Soweto landmark now housing a restaurant and entertainment center, where you can taste locally brewed Soweto Gold beer.
Lunch happens at the Backpacker's Lodge Boma & Outdoor Restaurant, where food is cooked over an open fire. The buffet includes potjiekos (traditional stews), braai (barbecue), pap (maize porridge), side salads and fresh-steamed bread. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. After the tour ends back at the lodge, your guide drives you back to your hotel in Johannesburg.
