The experience

The morning starts at Liliesleaf Farm, where you'll see the compound where Mandela and other ANC leaders were captured during the Rivonia Trial: a moment that shaped the country's trajectory. From there, you move to Constitutional Hill, walking through the Old Fort Prison where Mandela spent time, then into the Constitutional Court, South Africa's highest court of justice, housed in a building that deliberately incorporates the old prison walls. By midday you'll have lunch at a local restaurant in Soweto before the afternoon begins.

The afternoon centers on Soweto itself. You'll spend 45 minutes at Mandela House Museum on Vilakazi Street, then move to the Hector Pieterson Museum to learn about the 1976 Soweto Uprising through the story of a thirteen-year-old boy whose death became a turning point. Freedom Square, where the Freedom Charter was signed, and Orlando Towers, Soweto's most photographed landmark, round out the stops. If time allows, the guide can arrange an optional walk through an informal settlement or a drive past Soccer City Stadium.

Your guide speaks English and travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi and bottled water. Hotel pickup and return are included, and the tour is wheelchair accessible. Children from age 3 are welcome.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you have a full day free and want to understand South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle through the actual places where it unfolded, rather than reading about it separately. The fixed 8-hour schedule and included transport mean you move efficiently between three sites that would take much longer to reach and enter on your own.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.

What exactly is Liliesleaf Farm and why does it matter to South African history?

Liliesleaf was the secret hideout where Nelson Mandela and other ANC leaders were arrested in 1962, leading to the Rivonia Trial and decades of imprisonment for many of them. The farm is where you see the actual spaces where they planned resistance to apartheid.

Will I actually go inside the Old Fort Prison where Mandela was held?

Yes. The Old Fort is part of Constitutional Hill, and you walk through it as part of the morning visit. The Constitutional Court is built on the same grounds, deliberately incorporating the old prison structure into the new building.

How much time do I spend in Soweto, and what are the main stops there?

Soweto takes up the entire afternoon from 1:30 PM to 5 PM. You visit Mandela House Museum (45 minutes), Hector Pieterson Museum (45 minutes), Freedom Square and Walter Sisulu House (30 minutes), and Orlando Towers for photos (15 minutes), with flexibility for optional stops if time allows.

Is lunch included, and where do we eat?

Lunch is included at a local Soweto restaurant during the 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM break between the morning and afternoon portions of the tour.

What's the difference between this tour and visiting these sites on my own?

The guide provides context and stories about each location that you would not get from walking through alone. Entrance fees to all sites are included in the price, and private transport means you don't navigate between Liliesleaf, Constitutional Hill and Soweto yourself or wait for public transport.
