Birdwatching at Durban Nature Reserves

  • Visit Pigeon Valley Nature Reserve
  • Explore Durban Botanical Gardens
  • Walk Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve trail

The experience

Pigeon Valley sits in central Durban as a 10-hectare reserve named for the Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon documented here in 1847. It preserves a fragment of the Stella bush that once covered the Berea and is considered one of KwaZulu-Natal's top birdwatching locations. The vegetation is climax coastal lowland forest with rare tree species like the Natal Elm, and the guide will point out Spotted Ground Thrush, Buff-spotted Flufftail, Green Malkoha and Green Twinspot as they move through.

The Durban Botanical Gardens span over 50 hectares at the foot of Berea and hold species from across South Africa and beyond. A small lake ringed with papyrus, decorative bananas and raffia palms sits within park-like grounds of large trees and vibrant flora. Black Sparrowhawk, Pink-backed Pelican, Red-backed Mannikin, Red-capped Robin-chat, White-eared Barbet and Purple-crested Turaco are among the birds the guide watches for here.

Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve lies just north of Durban center near Umhlanga Rocks. A short trail crosses preserved dune forest and the lagoon itself, passing through varied habitats where Green Malkoha, Spotted Ground-thrush, Olive Woodpecker and Crested Guineafowl appear. The tour runs 6 to 8 hours total, with an air-conditioned vehicle moving between the three sites and pickup from your hotel or cruise ship.
