The Experience
Pickup from your Johannesburg hotel starts at 9:30am, followed by a ninety-minute drive to the Cradle of Humankind. You arrive at Maropeng Visitor Centre, where a massive burial mound called the Tumulus marks the entrance. The museum itself is a world-class exhibition spanning 2,500 square meters, built around the story of human development over millions of years. An underground boat ride carries you through the exhibits, moving through displays that explain how the fossils found here — thousands of hominid remains, plus plants and animals — shaped our understanding of where we came from.
After Maropeng, you move to Sterkfontein Caves, the most famous of the fifteen major fossil sites in the Cradle. This is where "Mrs Ples" and "Little Foot" were unearthed, two of the most significant discoveries in paleoanthropology. Your guide leads you into the caves themselves, showing you the actual sites and explaining what each find revealed about human ancestry. The caves are open Tuesday through Sunday, so plan accordingly if your travel dates are flexible.
The full day is managed for you: transport, entry to both sites, and a guide who speaks English or French are all arranged. You bring casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes. A bottle of water is provided; additional drinks can be purchased on-site. Infants travel on an adult's lap. The tour suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with cardiovascular concerns, as the caves involve some walking and uneven terrain.
