The Experience
Your guide picks you up from your Johannesburg hotel and drives you to the Lion and Safari Park for the day's first stop: a one-hour open-vehicle safari through the lion enclosure. You ride in an open vehicle through the habitat where lions roam freely, getting views most visitors to the region never get. After the safari, you browse the Five Dome Shopping Center for African art and local handicrafts before heading to the Cradle of Humankind.
The second half of the day moves underground. At Sterkfontein Caves, your guide leads a one-hour tour through the caverns where some of the world's earliest hominid fossils were discovered. You walk through natural formations millions of years old and learn how the site shaped our understanding of human evolution. The caves sit within the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning the region where these discoveries were made.
Your final stop is Maropeng, an interactive exhibition center designed around four elements—Earth, Fire, Wind and Water—that trace humanity's journey from our earliest ancestors to today. The exhibits are hands-on, not passive displays, so you move through them at your own pace. Your guide returns you to your hotel after the center closes, ending a 10-hour day that covers wildlife, geology, and human history without requiring you to arrange transport or buy tickets separately.

What happens during the safari at Lion and Safari Park?
You ride in an open-vehicle safari through the lion enclosure for one hour, watching the lions roam freely in their natural habitat from close range—this is the only wildlife viewing on the tour.
Can I visit Sterkfontein Caves on my own, or does the guide lead the tour?
Your guide leads a one-hour underground tour of Sterkfontein Caves, pointing out the fossil sites and explaining the geological formations and their significance to human evolution.
What are the interactive exhibits at Maropeng like?
Maropeng's exhibition center uses four elements—Earth, Fire, Wind and Water—to tell the story of human evolution and development. The exhibits are interactive, meaning you engage with them rather than viewing displays behind glass.
Is hotel pickup really included, or only from certain areas?
Hotel pickup is included from Johannesburg hotels in Sandton or Rosebank; your guide collects you in the morning and returns you after the tour ends.
How much time do I spend at each location?
The safari takes one hour, Sterkfontein Caves takes one hour, and you have time to browse the Five Dome Shopping Center and explore Maropeng's exhibits. The full tour runs 10 hours including transport.
What should I bring for the open-vehicle safari?
Bottled water is provided. Wear sunscreen and a hat, as the open vehicle offers no shade during the one-hour safari through the lion enclosure.
