A private tour from Johannesburg to the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 50 km northwest of the city, combines a visit to Sterkfontein Caves or Maropeng with a game drive through Rhino and Lion Park. You choose which paleoanthropological site to visit, then move through a 1,200-hectare reserve where lions, rhinos, wild dogs, buffalo and cheetahs roam. The Experience

If you land in Johannesburg with a free afternoon or want to pack two very different African experiences into one day, this tour threads them together without you arranging the transport or the timing. Your guide picks you up from your hotel, and the route depends on what you choose: Sterkfontein Caves, where fossils dating back nearly 4 million years still surface, or Maropeng, the visitor centre for the same World Heritage Site. The Cradle of Humankind holds more Australopithecus fossils than anywhere else on earth — the remains of "Mrs Ples" and "Little Foot" were both found here — and the caves themselves reopened after two years of closure.

After the paleoanthropological site, the game drive takes over. Rhino and Lion Park sits inside the World Heritage Site boundary and covers 1,200 hectares; the reserve holds over 700 animals including white rhino, lion, wild dog, buffalo, cheetah, hippo and crocodile. You move through the park in the air-conditioned vehicle, spotting what the day brings — the drive is the variable part, and that is the point. The tour is built to be relaxed and flexible; your guide Shane is an author and knows the region well enough to adjust the stops and the pace to what you want to see.

WiFi stays on board throughout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Entrance fees to Sterkfontein Caves (R 150) and Rhino and Lion Park (R 250) are separate; if you choose Maropeng instead of the caves, that swap is yours to make at booking. Children from age 6 ride comfortably, and infants can travel in a pram or stroller.
