Kayaking on Soča River: Whitewater in Bovec
Paddle your own kayak through Soča whitewater
Whitewater kayaking on the Soča River near Bovec puts you in control of a sit-on-top kayak through easier rapids and mountain views, with a professional guide, transport from town and all equipment supplied. The trip runs about 1.5 hours of paddling and is designed for anyone without prior kayak experience. Children from age 10 are welcome; a minimum of two people per booking applies.
The Experience
You arrive in Bovec with a free afternoon or a gap in your itinerary, and the Soča is right there — emerald water, mountain walls, and rapids that look manageable. The guide meets you in town, handles the transfer to the put-in, and walks you through the basics on a sit-on-top kayak, which is stable enough that you don't need to have paddled before. The boat responds to your paddle strokes, not to muscle memory or technique you haven't learned yet.
The 1.5 hours on the water covers the easier sections of the Soča, where the current moves but the rapids don't demand split-second decisions. You steer your own line through the flow, feel the river push back, and watch the mountain slopes rise on both sides. The guide stays close, calls out the line through each rapid, and makes sure nobody ends up swimming. It is a workout — your shoulders and core will know it — but the fun starts from the first paddle stroke because you are the one making the boat move.
The trip includes professional guide supervision, transport to and from the put-in, all whitewater equipment, and free photos taken during the paddle. The Riverpass Bovec (a regional access fee) runs €6–15 per adult and €3–7.50 per child aged up to 15, in effect from June through mid-September; outside those dates there is no additional fee. Bring your own bathing suit.

How long is the actual paddling time on the water?
The kayaking itself runs about 1.5 hours on the easier sections of the Soča River. The full outing, including transport from Bovec and setup, takes around 2.5 hours total.
What's included in the price?
The kayak trip includes a professional guide, transport from Bovec to the put-in and back, all whitewater equipment, and free photos taken during the paddle. The Riverpass Bovec regional fee (€6–15 per adult, €3–7.50 per child up to 15) applies only from June through mid-September.
Can children go on this trip?
Children from age 10 are welcome. A minimum of two people per booking is required, and a moderate level of physical fitness is necessary for the paddling and water conditions.
What should I bring?
Bring your own bathing suit. The guide and equipment provider supply everything else — kayak, paddle, life jacket and any other whitewater gear. You will get wet, so plan accordingly.
What is the Soča River like when I arrive?
The Soča is an emerald-colored river flowing through mountain terrain near Bovec. The trip covers easier rapids where the current moves steadily but the whitewater is manageable for paddlers without experience. Mountain views line both banks throughout the paddle.
