The Experience

Jure grinned at us from the van window, waving his arm like he already knew we were nervous. “Don’t worry,” he said, “the river’s cold but the wetsuits are warm.” I liked him right away. He handed me a paddle and helped my kid adjust her helmet — she looked so serious about it, but then giggled when the strap tickled her chin. The Sava Dolinka was louder than I expected, all that water rushing past green banks and wildflowers. I could smell pine needles and something earthy — not sure what, but it reminded me of camping as a kid.

We shoved off together, seven of us plus Jure at the back shouting encouragement (and sometimes teasing us for our paddling technique). Rapids came up fast — not huge ones, but enough to get your heart jumping. My left shoe filled with icy water on the first splash and honestly, I forgot about it after ten seconds because everyone was laughing so much. At one point Jure pointed out a heron standing still as stone on a rock. “He’s better at this than we are,” someone said. We all tried to pronounce “Sava” properly; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Slovenian — probably butchered it.

The whole thing took maybe two hours? Time felt weird out there. We stopped once so Jure could take some GoPro photos (I have one where my daughter looks like she’s flying). Sun kept peeking through clouds and everything smelled clean — river air is different somehow. By the end I was tired in that good way, arms heavy but happy. The van ride back was quiet except for my daughter talking about coming back next year. I still think about that stretch of river sometimes when things get noisy at home.
