Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Cicmany and relax at spa
- Visit traditional village Čičmany
- See wooden Bethlehem in Rajecká Lesná
- Relax in Aphrodite Spa Rajecké Teplice
The experience
Čičmany sits in the Rajecká dolina valley surrounded by the Strážovské vrchy and Malá Fatra mountains. The village's log houses are painted with geometric patterns: originally applied by women to protect the wood from sun damage, later expanded into the intricate designs that cover entire exteriors today. You'll walk through a reserve of 136 of these structures, each one a record of a craft that turned practical weatherproofing into ornament.
The tour also includes the wooden Bethlehem in nearby Rajecká Lesná, a carving that took master craftsman Jozef Pekara 15 years to complete starting in 1980. The work contains 300 figures, more than half of them animated, depicting Christ's birth and life alongside scenes from Slovak history, castles, cathedrals and modern buildings. It sits in the House of Our Lord's Nativity, part of a pilgrimage area around the Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
The day ends at Aphrodite Spa in Rajecké Teplice, where you'll soak in thermal water heated to 38°C. The water contains calcium and magnesium ions and has been used for healing since medieval times, particularly for locomotor and neurological conditions. The spa sits amid the same mountain scenery you saw in the morning. Your licensed guide speaks English, Spanish or Russian throughout the day.
What’s included
