Bandia Reserve Safari: Lions & Wildlife from Dakar
Baobabs, giraffes and lions without arranging your own transport
A morning safari tour from Dakar hotels combines a 90-minute walk through Bandia Reserve—home to zebras, antelopes, giraffes, rhinos, monkeys and birds—with a 30-minute game drive among lions at Bandia Ranch. A live guide in English or French leads both stops; hotel pickup, the 4x4 vehicle, entrance fees and all taxes are included. The tour runs 3 to 6 hours depending on wildlife sightings and traffic.
The Experience
The morning starts with pickup from your hotel in Dakar. A driver collects you and takes you south to Bandia Reserve, where a guide meets you at the entrance. The reserve protects an ecosystem of baobabs and acacias scattered across open ground—the kind of landscape where you can actually see the animals instead of hunting them through dense brush. Zebras, antelopes, giraffes and rhinos move across the reserve; monkeys inhabit the trees; crocodiles stay near water. The guide walks you through for roughly 90 minutes, moving at a pace that lets you watch and photograph without rushing.
After the reserve, you return to the 4x4 and drive across to Bandia Ranch, which sits just opposite. This stop is a 30-minute game drive among the lions—a different kind of encounter, since you stay in the vehicle while the animals move around you. The lions are the main draw here; the game drive is shorter and more focused than the reserve walk.
The whole outing takes between 3 and 6 hours from start to finish, depending on how long you spend watching and how traffic moves on the return to Dakar. The air-conditioned vehicle stays with you the whole time. Your guide speaks English or French, so language is not a barrier. Hotel dropoff happens once the ranch visit ends.

What animals will I actually see at Bandia Reserve?
Bandia Reserve is home to zebras, antelopes, giraffes, rhinos, monkeys, birds and crocodiles. The baobabs and acacias give you open sightlines, so spotting depends less on luck and more on where the animals happen to be that morning—a guide who knows the reserve increases your chances.
Is the walk through Bandia Reserve difficult?
The 90-minute walk is suitable for all fitness levels according to the operator, though the reserve is open ground with minimal shade. Wear sun protection and bring water; the pace is set by the guide and the group, not by a fixed schedule.
How long is the game drive at Bandia Ranch?
The game drive among the lions at Bandia Ranch lasts about 30 minutes. You stay in the 4x4 while the drive happens, so it is a different experience from the walking portion at the reserve.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not part of this tour. The morning outing takes 3 to 6 hours total, so plan accordingly if you need a meal before or after.
Can I book this if I'm staying outside Dakar?
Hotel pickup is included, so the tour collects you from your accommodation in Dakar. If you are staying elsewhere, contact the operator to confirm whether pickup is available from your location.
What language does the guide speak?
Your guide speaks English or French, and you choose which one at checkout. Both languages are available on every departure.
