The Experience
The Bandia reserve sits 65 km from Dakar on the main road toward Mbour, about 15 km inland from the Saly-Portudal coast. It is not a zoo or a fenced enclosure where animals are fed on schedule—it is a working restoration project where large African mammals have been reintroduced to 3,500 hectares of bush that was degraded and is now regenerating. Giant baobabs, thorny scrub and tangled lianas make up the landscape, and the animals move through it as they would in a natural reserve. You travel by air-conditioned 4x4, which means you stay comfortable in the heat and can cover ground without disturbing the wildlife.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or one additional language, and knows the reserve well enough to locate animals and explain what you are seeing—the species, their behavior, why they were reintroduced, how the reserve has changed the land. The 3- to 4-hour tour gives you time to move through different parts of the reserve and encounter multiple animals rather than a single loop. Water is included. Pickup from your Dakar hotel is part of the booking, so you do not arrange transport to the reserve entrance yourself.
