The experience
Jabal Fihrayn rises from the desert northwest of Riyadh like a natural wall, and the Tuwaiq Escarpment that forms it drops 1,000 feet into what was once an ancient ocean bed. From the top, the horizon stretches unbroken: no city, no trees, only the barren earth meeting the sky. Your driver collects you from your hotel or the airport and takes the track toward the escarpment. Once you arrive, your hiking guide leads you up the scenic trail to the lookout point at Mount Al-Fahren, where you stop for a picnic snack and take in the views before heading back down. The bat cave sits along the return route if you want to explore it.
At the campsite, the day shifts from hiking to experience. You'll have archery, snacks with coffee and tea, and dinner accompanied by music. Throughout the tour you pass Elephant Rock and the white cliffs of Jabal Abyad, and from the escarpment itself you can spot dried riverbeds carving through the desert floor and camels moving across the land far below: herders still following the ancient caravan route that once connected Arabia's greatest kingdoms. The 4x4 vehicle handles the rough terrain, and your guide shares the history and geology of the landscape as you move through it.
The tour runs 6 to 7 hours total and ends with a return transfer to the outskirts of Riyadh. A moderate level of physical fitness is needed for the hiking. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, or pregnancy.
