Gorilla Trekking from Kigali: One Hour with Mountain Gorillas
Track mountain gorillas through the forest and stand face-to-face with an endangered family
A full-day gorilla trekking tour from Kigali takes you into Volcanoes National Park to locate and spend one hour observing a mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat. The trek includes park entry, a live guide in English or French, packed lunch, and a cultural visit to Gorilla Guardian Village before your return to Kigali. Minimum age is 15 years. The trek involves hiking on uneven terrain.
The experience
Your driver picks you up at 5:00 AM from your Kigali hotel and drives you to Musanze, the gateway town for Volcanoes National Park. At 7:00 AM you check in at the park headquarters for legal formalities and a briefing on what to expect during the trek. The guide explains gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and the work of Dian Fossey, the primatologist whose research shaped protection of these endangered creatures. Then the trek begins on the forest trails where trackers have already located a gorilla family.
You spend one hour with the mountain gorillas once the family is found, photographing and observing them as they feed, rest and interact. The guide shares details about their diet, social structure and how closely they are related to humans. This is the core of the day: the moment the entire trek builds toward. After the hour ends, you hike back down the mountain.
Lunch is a packed meal eaten after the trek, giving you time to rest before the final stop at Gorilla Guardian Village, where you experience local Rwandan culture and meet community members. Your driver then takes you back to Kigali, arriving at your hotel in the evening. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
