The Experience

"Is that really a lion over there?" I whispered, squinting through the open roof as our guide, Jean-Claude, just grinned and nodded. We’d left Kigali before sunrise—honestly, I barely remember the first hour except for the smell of coffee clinging to my sweater and the way the city lights faded behind us. The road to Akagera was bumpy in places but kind of peaceful too. We stopped at Imigongo Art Center halfway—stretching legs and looking at those swirling black-and-white patterns (I tried to ask about them in Kinyarwanda; Jean-Claude chuckled and helped me out). Coffee there tasted earthy, almost smoky.

The game drive itself? It’s not like TV. There’s this slow build-up—the windows down, air warm and grassy, everyone scanning for movement. Suddenly you’re surrounded by zebras or a giraffe just gliding past like it owns the place (which it kind of does). At one point we watched a herd of buffalo so close I could hear their hooves thudding on dry ground. Someone in our group got quiet when we spotted two rhinos by a lake—there was this hush, even the birds seemed to pause. I didn’t expect that feeling; it sticks with you.

Lunch was simple but good—rice, chicken stew, fresh fruit—eaten near the water while hippos huffed somewhere out of sight. The sun felt heavy on my arms by then. On the way back toward Kigali, everyone was quieter than before. Maybe tired or maybe just full of all those wild shapes still moving behind our eyes. I keep thinking about that lion’s tail flicking in the grass and how Jean-Claude never seemed surprised by anything we saw.
