The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Cluj accommodation at 8 am and a drive along the Transapuseana road, the newest and most panoramic route through the Apuseni Carpathians. You stop along the way to take in 360-degree views and see the old wooden architecture that marks the region. Rosia Montana sits in what was once called the village-with-100-lakes, and the landscape itself tells the story of two thousand years of mining: first under the Romans, who called it Alburnus Maior and carved galleries that still stand, then through the Middle Ages and into modern times.
At the Mining Museum, you walk the footsteps of the Romans through those ancient galleries and learn how miners used fire, water and vinegar to extract gold: techniques that seem strange until you understand the constraints they worked under. The museum traces the evolution of mining methods across centuries. After 2000 years of extraction, Rosia Montana nearly vanished: in the 1990s, a plan to build Europe's largest cyanide lake here almost went through, stopped only by the biggest civil society protests in modern Romanian history. In 2021, the site became a UNESCO heritage site instead. You walk through the village to see the historical buildings now being restored, then begin the hike.
The hike covers 8 km with a minimum elevation of 847 meters and a maximum of 1112 meters: a climb of about 265 meters total. It takes roughly two and a half hours and passes through the ancient mining cultural landscape, with nature reserves and scenic views woven through the terrain shaped by centuries of human work. The route returns you to Cluj in the evening along the Aries Valley.

What exactly is inside the Roman gold mine at Rosia Montana?
The Mining Museum and the galleries themselves, carved by Roman miners over 2000 years ago when the site was called Alburnus Maior. You walk through these ancient passages and see the mining techniques (using fire, water and vinegar) that made extraction possible without modern tools. The galleries are among the oldest mines still standing in Europe.
How steep is the hike, and what kind of fitness do I need?
The hike is 8 km with about 265 meters of elevation gain and takes roughly two and a half hours. You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, bad knees or other mobility problems. Minimum age is 15.
What is the Transapuseana road, and why does the tour use it?
The Transapuseana road is the newest and most panoramic route through the Apuseni Mountains, with stops offering 360-degree views of the landscape. It is the main way to reach Rosia Montana from Cluj, and the stops along it are part of the day itself.
Why did Rosia Montana become a UNESCO site so recently?
The site was nearly destroyed by a plan to build Europe's largest cyanide lake for a new mining project in the 1990s. Civil society protests, the biggest in modern Romanian history, stopped the project after 20 years of campaigning and 9 years of international trial. In 2021, Rosia Montana was finally inscribed as a UNESCO heritage site, recognizing its 2000-year mining history and cultural landscape.
What should I bring for the hike?
Good hiking boots, hiking pants, a waterproof jacket and pants, a 25–35 liter trail backpack, midlayers, a hat or cap, sunglasses, gloves, hiking poles and a water bottle or hydration pack holding at least 1 liter. Dress for the season. The operator can help with hiking poles if you need them. Bring your own personal equipment or arrange it in advance.
