The experience

The drive from Timisoara takes around three hours, heading southwest into the Banat region. Along the way, you'll stop at the Decebalus rock sculpture, the largest in Europe, a monument carved into the cliff face overlooking the Danube. The guide explains the history of Decebalus, the last king of the Dacians, and you'll have time to photograph the carving against the river backdrop.

The motorboat ride is the centerpiece of the day. You'll cruise 9 kilometers through the narrowest section of the Danube, where the river forms a natural border between Romania and Serbia. The boat passes Ponicova Cave, the largest cave in the Danube Gorge. You'll travel partway inside by water to see the scale of it. The gorge walls rise around you as the boat navigates the tight channel, and the guide points out geological features and wildlife along the way.

After leaving the gorge, the drive continues for about an hour and a half along the river to the first waterfall stop. A five-minute walk through the forest brings you to one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Banat. Later, you'll reach Modavita Waterfall, which has a distinctive shape (some say it resembles a dog with its mouth open), and is covered in green moss. Both stops allow time to walk close to the water and photograph the falls.
