The experience

Voronet Monastery opens the day. Built in 1488 in three months, three weeks and three days, it earned the nickname "Sistine Chapel of the East" for its intense blue exterior frescoes that have held their color through centuries of weather despite the paint ingredients remaining a mystery. The murals depict Christian history in a style shaped by folk belief, Eastern culture and Orthodox thought: a visual narrative that once served as the only Bible lesson many country dwellers would ever receive.

Moldovita Monastery, constructed between 1532 and 1537, continues that tradition. Its frescoes are an immense color illustration of Biblical scenes adapted to the place's own history and the community's important moments. The monastery was added to UNESCO heritage in 1993, the same year as Sucevita. Walking the exterior walls, you move through layers of religious instruction painted directly onto stone.

Sucevita Monastery, the newest of the three, was built in Moldavian style with Gothic and Byzantine influences. Its murals are dominated by shades of green, created through an ancient technique using natural pigments. The 12-hour tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Iasi, all entrance fees, bottled water and transportation in a modern vehicle with your guide.

Is this one for you?The 12-hour commitment leaves room for the three monasteries and the drive between them, but rules out combining this with other Iasi attractions the same day. Book it when you can dedicate the full day to Bucovina's frescoes.

Voronet Monastery's intense blue exterior frescoes have preserved their hue for centuries, but the ingredients used to create the paint remain a mystery despite centuries of study.

How long does the day trip take from start to finish?

What makes the frescoes at these monasteries different from indoor church paintings?
