The Experience

You meet your guide in Brasov Old Town and spend the first part of the tour getting oriented. The guide walks you through Brasov's history—its ancient origins and importance as a medieval market town in Transylvania—before you set out to the sites themselves. Each stop has a story: the pink-and-peach Council House at the center of Piata Sfatului Square, the towers that once fortified the city, and Rope Street (Strada Sforii), a cobbled walkway so narrow it's said to be the narrowest lane in Eastern Europe. You'll also see the Hollywood-style Brasov sign perched in the hills above the city.

The Black Church is Brasov's most celebrated landmark and one of Eastern Europe's most iconic religious monuments. Your guide explains how it got its name—from a 17th-century fire that blackened its walls—and you can go inside at your own expense to see the statues, artwork and the 4,000-pipe organ. After that, the tour moves through the city to the Schei district, where you visit St Nicholas Church, a 15th-century Orthodox church with frescoes and icons, and then the First Romanian School Museum next door. This was Transylvania's first school, and you'll explore the old schoolroom with its original desks and antique book collection (entrance fee separate). The tour ends back at the starting point in the Old Town.

Groups are capped at 10 people, which means you get a closer look at each stop without being herded through. The walk takes 2 hours total and is suitable for all fitness levels, though comfortable walking shoes are essential. Note that many sites close on Mondays, the Black Church has closures on certain religious and administrative days, and the First Romanian School Museum stops admitting visitors at 5 pm.
