The experience
The day runs eight hours and covers the island's volcanic and coastal landmarks in a single loop. You're picked up from your hotel and driven in a comfortable vehicle to ten stops that move between black basalt cliffs, waterfalls flowing into pools, and beaches lined with palm trees. The guide shares the geology and history at each site: the frozen lava flows along the Route des Laves, the story of Notre-Dame des Laves church that survived a 1977 eruption, the baroque architecture of Sainte-Anne. Stops include swimming moments at Hermitage Beach and Manapany Baths, and time to walk around Cap Méchant's dramatic cliffs and the lava tunnels on the Route des Laves.
Hermitage Beach is the main beach stop, where you can swim, snorkel or eat at a restaurant facing the ocean. The guide offers local tips on the best spots. Salt Pond Beach is known for its black sand. Niagara Waterfall sits in Sainte-Suzanne surrounded by vegetation, with a fresh-water pool at its base. Anse des Cascades is a green setting where waterfalls flow into an enclosed area bordered by palms. Le Barachois in Saint-Denis sits on the waterfront with historic cannons and a view of the Indian Ocean.
Bottled water, coffee or tea and sweet honey samoussas are included throughout the day. The guide drives. You sit in the vehicle between stops and walk at each site. The pace suits all fitness levels. If you're staying without a car, hotel pickup means you don't arrange transport between landmarks.
