Qatar Desert: Sunrise Safari, Dune Bashing & Camel Ride
Early morning desert drive with camel ride and sandboarding

The Experience
The first thing I remember is how quiet it felt when we left Doha—just that faint hum of the city behind us, then nothing but open road and a sky that hadn’t decided on its color yet. Our guide, Khalid, kept checking if we were comfortable in the 4x4 (I was nervous but pretended otherwise). By the time we reached Mesaieed, the air had this dry mineral smell I can’t really describe—almost like warm stone after rain. The dunes looked endless in every direction, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small out there.
Dune bashing was… well, let’s just say my stomach still remembers it. Khalid grinned the whole time—he said he’s been driving these routes for years and could probably do it blindfolded (I hoped he wouldn’t try). The sand was cool under my hand when we stopped for photos; it slipped right through my fingers. There was this silence between gusts of wind—except for someone laughing in another jeep nearby. We watched the sunrise together, all of us a bit quiet for once. It’s hard to explain why that moment sticks with me.
I tried the camel ride too—just five minutes or so. The handler called his favorite “Majid” and helped me up; I nearly lost a shoe climbing on. The camel’s fur was rougher than I expected and smelled faintly sweet, like hay left in the sun. Li laughed when I tried to say thank you in Arabic—probably butchered it. After that came sandboarding (I wiped out twice), then tea by a small bonfire if you wanted it. Breakfast was simple but warm—I think it tasted better because of where we were.
