Step-by-step itinerary

Certified scuba tour in San Juan bay

  • Attend theory review on diving science
  • Practice basic skills in shallow shoreline
  • Walk with full scuba equipment to water
  • Explore protected bay with dive guides
  • See historic fish wall and sculptures
  • Observe marine life like turtles and stingrays
  • Return walking out of water with equipment

The experience

Two and a half hours gets you from the beach into a bay that holds a working urban reef in the middle of San Juan. You walk in with full scuba gear (tank and weights included), and descend alongside a certified guide into water no deeper than 30 feet. The bottom is a mix of natural reef, artificial formations, the ruins of a historic fish wall, and a collection of Greek and Roman sculpture replicas that divers call Atlantis. Yellowtail snappers, damselfish and stingrays move through the site regularly. Green and hawksbill sea turtles are residents. Visibility ranges from 5 to 20 feet depending on conditions.

Before you enter the water, a dive professional walks you through the theory and the skills you'll need: neutral buoyancy, equipment checks, the science of diving at depth. You practice in the shallow part of the shoreline, then move into the bay under direct supervision. The 45 minutes you spend underwater is the core of the dive. The rest of the time covers the briefing, gearing up, and rinsing off in the fresh-water shower afterward. Scuba Dogs operates from the Marine Park itself, so lockers, restrooms and a gift shop with refreshments are steps away when you're done.

You need an Open Water Diver certification or higher from PADI, NAUI or SSI to book this dive. The shallow depth and protected bay mean you can explore safely without the decompression stops a deeper dive would require. Visibility can be limited, and you'll be carrying full equipment in and out of the water, so moderate fitness helps. Public transportation reaches the site, and the dive center is wheelchair accessible.
