After a long flight, it’s like my brain goes fuzzy, but there was our driver, José, waving near the baggage carousel. He smiled and offered to help with our bags (my cousin overpacked again), then led us straight outside—no hunting for taxis or standing around in that sticky air. The Mercedes van was parked right there, doors open, cool air spilling out. Honestly, I’d forgotten how humid Puerto Rico gets until that moment.
The inside of the van felt almost too nice for us—leather seats, tons of space (even with all our luggage), and that cold AC blasting away any leftover airport smell. José chatted with us in both Spanish and English, switching back and forth depending who he was talking to. At one point he pointed out a bakery as we left San Juan—Panadería España—and said they make the best mallorcas if we ever pass through again. I tried repeating “mallorca” and totally butchered it; he laughed and said not to worry, everyone does the first time.
Driving out of the city toward Rio Grande, I watched the palm trees blur past tinted windows while my aunt dozed off. It was weirdly peaceful—just the low hum of the road and José humming along to some salsa on the radio. He knew exactly where our Airbnb was (I’d sent him the address ahead) and navigated those narrow side streets like he’d done it a thousand times. When we finally pulled up, he helped unload every last bag (we had fourteen between us—I counted), then gave us a quick tip about where to grab mofongo nearby. I still think about how easy it all felt compared to other trips where you’re scrambling for rides or lost in translation. So yeah, next time I’m dragging family across Puerto Rico, I’m booking this private transfer again… probably with less luggage though.
