itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — ATV ride through private Hacienda

  • Receive safety briefing and instructions
  • Buckle up for 2-hour ATV ride
  • Drive through plains, forests, mountains, lagoons
  • Spot wildlife and diverse flora
  • Visit 1800's sugarcane plantation home
  • Listen to Hacienda history
  • Take photos at plantation
  • Conclude at Mojito Bar on hill
  • Enjoy mojito and empanada

The first thing that hit me wasn’t the roar of the ATV — it was the smell. Wet earth, a little sweet from the grass, and something smoky in the distance (someone grilling, maybe?). Our guide, Luis, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew I’d be nervous. I was — these things look bigger up close. But he walked us through everything, even double-checked my helmet because I’d definitely put it on backwards at first. My friend laughed so hard she almost dropped her phone.

We set off in a line, engines buzzing over the hum of tree frogs. The trail cut through open fields where horses grazed and then ducked into thick forest — cool shade all at once, with flashes of sunlight making patterns on our arms. At one point we splashed through a shallow lagoon (I got soaked; no regrets), and Luis pointed out some wild orchids clinging to a tree trunk. He told us about the hacienda’s history as a sugarcane plantation while we caught our breath outside Mi Casa, this old Spanish estate that looked straight out of a movie. Honestly, I didn’t expect to care about old houses but standing there with mud on my boots made it feel real.

The last stretch climbed up to the Mojito Bar — you could see all the way back to San Juan if you squinted past the palms. It was breezy up there, someone’s salsa playlist drifting from inside. We sipped passionfruit mojitos (included in the tour) and tried empanadas that were still hot enough to burn your tongue if you weren’t careful. My hands shook just enough from adrenaline that I nearly spilled mine — nobody judged. There’s something about laughing with strangers after two hours of bouncing around together that makes it easy to forget you’re covered in dust.
