The Experience

“You’re not supposed to shoot it,” José grinned, sliding the first glass across the table. I’d barely sat down inside Casa BACARDÍ, but the smell of sugarcane and something woody hit me right away — it’s different than any bar I’ve been in. He explained how their family’s been making rum for generations — honestly, I didn’t expect to care about barrels or blending, but his stories made it feel personal.

The best part? The tasting itself. Four glasses lined up in front of me, each one deeper in color. We paired them with little squares of chocolate that melted instantly on my tongue — I still think about that combination of sweet and burn. At one point I tried to pronounce “añejo” like José did; he laughed and shook his head (“close enough!”). There’s something about sipping rum right where it’s made that just hits different, especially when you can smell the molasses in the air and hear distant music drifting from the bar outside.

I liked that they kept things relaxed — no rush, no pressure to buy anything (though I did grab a bottle of Special Reserve because you literally can’t get it anywhere else). WiFi was spotty but nobody seemed to care; everyone was too busy comparing notes on flavors or asking José questions about his favorite blend. On the way back to San Juan, the sun was setting over the bay and my head felt light — maybe from the rum or maybe just from feeling like I’d actually learned something real about Puerto Rico. Hard to say.
