The experience

The day starts at Doramar plaza in Dorado, about twenty minutes from San Juan by car. From there you head into Vega Baja to explore the Charco Azul canyon and Arenales cave formations: three separate cave systems connected by river and forest. The tubing portion takes you through the underground passages. The hiking sections climb the terrain between them, moving through dense forest and over difficult ground to reach the waterfalls and the cliff-jump points.

This is a moderate-to-challenging outing built around movement and climbing, not observation. You'll need closed shoes and a moderate fitness level to handle the terrain. The four to five hour span covers tubing, trekking, climbing and the waterfall sites, with bottled water provided throughout.

Is this one for you?Four to five hours means you'll need the morning or afternoon clear, but it leaves room for another activity or a meal elsewhere on your day in the area. The moderate-to-challenging rating suits anyone with solid fitness who's comfortable climbing steep forest terrain and moving through caves. If you prefer walking at your own pace on flat ground, look for a gentler waterfall hike instead.
