Make a handwoven art piece in three hours, not watch someone else weave

A weaving class in Terceira teaches you frame loom techniques in a wooden cabin set in natural surroundings, where you finish a small wall hanging or coaster of your own design in about three hours. The instructor provides patient instruction in English, all yarns and tools, and coffee or tea. Beginners and experienced weavers alike are welcome, and the cabin is accessible by public transportation.

The experience

Three hours is enough to learn the basics and walk away with something you made. The cabin sits in a natural setting on the island, and the instructor teaches both rigid heddle and frame loom techniques, walking you through the steps at your own pace. You choose the colors and materials as you work, so the finished piece reflects what you wanted to make, not what the instructor decided for you.

The class includes all the yarns, needles, shuttle, comb and the loom itself, so you arrive with nothing but your hands. Coffee and tea are provided. If you already weave or want to tackle something bigger (a scarf, table runner, placemat or cushion cover), you can message ahead and arrange a longer session. The instructor is open to custom projects and has a variety of looms on hand, including 4-shaft table looms and inkle looms, which you'll see while you work.

The cabin is reachable by public transportation, so you don't need a rental car or a ride from your hotel. Children from age 7 are welcome, and the activity suits all fitness levels.
