The experience
The tour starts with pickup at your hotel in Angra do Heroísmo and heads straight to Monte Brasil, a volcano formed underwater that now rises above the city. From there you get a bird's-eye view of Angra itself: the harbor, the old town, the layout of the island spreading out below. Then the jeep turns inland onto the dirt roads of Serra da Ribeirinha, where the landscape shifts to villages, pasture, and a series of viewpoints over the interior. You stop several times to photograph the terrain and the views back toward the coast.
After lunch (which you arrange separately), the tour offers a visit to Algar do Carvão, a volcanic cave where you can walk inside the crater itself and learn how the eruptions shaped the island's geology. This stop is optional and depends on the cave's opening hours and your schedule. If it's closed, the guide typically substitutes a cheese factory and other local stops instead. The day ends with a return to your hotel.
The guide speaks English or Portuguese and travels with you the whole way, pointing out details along the route, including Salga Bay, where villagers fought off a Spanish invasion in the sixteenth century. The jeep is private to your group, so the pace and stops are yours to shape within the eight-hour window.
