The experience
The tour begins by heading into the Caldeira of Guilherme Moniz, the second-largest volcano on the island, so you can drive the inner roads of Agualva and see the crater from inside. The descent to Baias da Agualva is optional, letting you decide how deep into the landscape you want to go. From there, the route follows your preferences: the guide offers a choice between visiting a cave or taking a short hiking trail before moving on to Biscoitos and then climbing toward Serreta.
At Serreta, another choice opens up: more dirt roads and possibly a second short hike, or a drive along the clifftop edge of the northwest coast. The tour stops for lunch at a traditional restaurant if you add that option. Afterward, you head inland, passing the viewpoint at Serra de Santa Bárbara, which sits on one of the roads crossing through the island's interior. The final stretch takes you to Christmas Cave to walk through the lava tubes, then to Algar do Carvão, an empty volcano crater, with possible stops at a small black forest entrance and the furnas de enxofre along the way.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and pickup is included from your hotel in Angra. Children from age 1 are welcome, and specialized infant seats are available. A guide speaks English or Portuguese throughout the day. Note that Algar do Carvão is closed for maintenance until early 2026, so that stop may not be available depending on your travel dates.
