Sintra Tuk Tuk Tour: Palaces & Beaches
See three palaces and the coast without entering the lines
A private tuk tuk tour of Sintra covers the panoramic views of Sintra National Palace, Pena National Palace and Castle of the Moors, then descends to the coastal villages of Azenhas do Mar and Praia das Maças. The Piaggio Ape Calesino (the three-wheeled vehicle locals call a tuk tuk) navigates the mountain roads and narrow village streets where regular cars face restrictions. Your guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and stops for short walks through the Serra's vegetation, ending at the oceanfront pool near Praia das Maças.

The experience
Sintra's palaces sit on ridges that overlook the town, and the tuk tuk reaches the panoramic stops where you see them without the queues at the gates. The oldest palace in Portugal, Sintra National Palace, appears first, its chimneys rising above the town center. From there the route climbs to Pena National Palace, the most visited palace in the country, perched on the mountain ridge. The guide explains its role as a Hollywood film location. Castle of the Moors, the medieval fortress built along the ridge line, comes next. All three stops are viewpoints where you stand outside and take in the scale and position of each building against the Serra landscape.
The second half of the tour drops down to the coast. Praia das Maças appears first (a small beach town with sand and a charming village around it), then Azenhas do Mar, the clifftop village that overlooks the Atlantic. At Azenhas do Mar you walk down a set of stairs through the exuberant vegetation of the Serra until you reach the oceanfront pool, where the village's houses spill down the cliff face. The tuk tuk avoids the traffic and vehicle restrictions that slow regular cars through Sintra's narrow streets, and the open-air vehicle lets you feel the air and vegetation change as you climb and descend the mountain.
The tour includes a bottle of Serra water, Queijadas de Sintra, the local pastry, and insurance for all passengers. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with children from age seven and up. The guide offers suggestions throughout the day on what else to do and how to spend the rest of your time in Sintra, so you leave with a sense of the place beyond the three main stops.

What is Castle of the Moors and why does the tour stop there?

Can I visit the inside of Pena National Palace or Sintra National Palace on this tour?
No. The tour stops at the panoramic viewpoints outside each palace so you see them from the best angles and hear their history from the guide. Entry to the palaces themselves is not included, which is why the tuk tuk avoids the lines at the gates.
How does the tuk tuk handle the mountain roads and narrow streets of Sintra?

What happens at Azenhas do Mar and Praia das Maças?
At Praia das Maças you see the beach and its surrounding village. At Azenhas do Mar you take a short walk down stairs through the Serra's vegetation until you reach an oceanfront pool, where the village's houses are built into the cliff face overlooking the Atlantic.
