The experience

The day starts at your hotel with pickup, then moves into Sintra's winding streets and gardens. You'll stop at a pastry shop to taste the region's famous sweet (the pillows locals have made for centuries) before heading uphill to Pena National Palace. The palace sits high in the Sintra mountains, a 19th-century fantasy of turrets and color overlooking the valleys below. Entry is included, and you can walk the terraces and gardens at your own pace, or use the immersive room and zoom guide if you want more detail about what you're standing in front of.

In the afternoon, the tour moves to the coast. Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe, sits on a cliff where the land drops into the Atlantic, and the views stretch across the water with nothing between you and the horizon. From there you continue to Boca do Inferno, a rocky escarpment where waves crash against the cliffs below, and then into the village of Cascais, where you have time to walk around the bay, browse the shops, or eat lunch (not included). The return to Lisbon follows the coastal road, passing beaches and the famous Praia do Guincho, known for its waves and surfers.
