The Experience
“You know, the fog here is like a blanket that hides stories,” our driver João said as we wound up toward Sintra. He was right. The air smelled like wet moss and pastry sugar from the bakeries opening up—almost too early for my stomach but somehow perfect. We stopped in the village first; João insisted we try travesseiros at Piriquita. I still have no idea how to pronounce it (he laughed when I tried), but that flaky almond cream thing? Worth every crumb on my shirt.
Pena Palace looked like something from a dream, all colors and tiles poking through the mist. There were peacocks somewhere—heard them before I saw them—and the stone was cold under my hand as we climbed up to the terrace. Our guide pointed out where kings once watched storms roll in from the Atlantic. It’s weird—I didn’t expect to feel so small looking out over those forests and rooftops, but there it was.
After Sintra, João drove us along winding roads to Cabo da Roca—the “end of Europe,” he called it. Wind whipped at our jackets and salt hung in the air; I could hear waves smashing below even before we got close to the edge. Didn’t linger long (my hair was everywhere), but that wildness sticks with you. Then Boca do Inferno: just rocks, sea spray, and this roar that made conversation pointless for a minute or two.
Cascais felt warmer—maybe just because of the sun finally showing up or maybe because everyone seemed to be outside, talking or laughing around flower-strewn streets. We wandered by the bay before heading back along the coast road, tired in that good way you get after seeing too much beauty at once. Still think about those cliffs sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home…
