The Experience

The first thing I remember is the red stone of Silves Castle against the sky—kind of rough under my hand when I leaned on the wall to look out. Our guide, João, told us stories about Moors and sieges while a couple of old men played cards in the square below. It smelled faintly like oranges (maybe from the groves nearby?) and honestly, it was quieter than I expected for a place with that much history. We wandered through the cathedral too—cool air, candles flickering, not many people around.

After that, we drove up into the hills toward Monchique. The road twisted through chestnut trees and eucalyptus—windows down, you could actually smell the sweet resin. We stopped at Caldas de Monchique where there’s this old spa; water trickles from stone fountains and some locals were filling bottles to take home. João laughed when I asked if it really makes you younger (“Only if you believe in magic!”). Lunch was on our own in the village square—tiny cafés with grilled sardines and pastéis de nata that tasted warm and buttery. I probably ate too many.

Mount Fóia was next—the highest point in southern Portugal but it doesn’t feel dramatic until you step out into the wind. Suddenly you can see all of Algarve laid out below, patchwork fields and distant sea. It was chilly up there even though it was sunny down in Silves. Someone handed me a jacket (thanks whoever you were). Last stop: a vineyard tucked between hills. We tasted three wines—one red that João said was “the pride of Monchique.” I tried to say its name in Portuguese but just got giggles from Ana pouring our glasses. Still think about that view from Fóia sometimes—you know how some places just stick with you?
